Harmonization of food labels for greater consumer information
On December 13, 2014 two new European food regulations will apply to foodstuffs. The objective is to harmonize labeling of foodstuffs and to respond to consumer demands for more information:
- Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 called INCO regulation
This regulation requires all professionals who sell processed, unpackaged foodstuffs to provide information for consumers about the allergens contained in their products.
14 allergens are affected: peanuts, celery, crustaceans, nuts, gluten, sesame seeds, milk, lupin, molluscs, mustard, eggs, fish, soybeans, and sulphites.
- Regulation (EU) No 1379/2013 called CMO regulation (Common organization of the markets in fishery and aquaculture products)
This regulation reinforces information on fishing methods and the origin of products from the sea. The label must indicate the scientific name of the fish in Latin, the fishing gear used, and the catch area or sub-area where the fish was caught.
